How to Replace Herman Miller Sayl 4D Arm Pads

If your Sayl has 4D arms, where the pad slides forwards and back and pivots in and out as well as going up and down, it uses a larger arm pad than the standard Sayl. It is held on by four screws rather than one, but it is still a quick job that needs a single screwdriver.

Is this the right pad?

Check that your pad moves forwards and backwards on the arm. If it does, you have 4D arms and need the Sayl 4D arm pads. If the pad does not slide and the arm only goes up and down, you need the smaller pad instead. See the standard Sayl arm pad guide.

What you will need

• A Torx T20 screwdriver or bit.
• A towel or blanket to lay the chair on.
• The Sayl 4D replacement arm pads. Screws are not included, because you reuse the originals.

Step by step

1. Raise the arm to its highest setting and slide the pad fully back, or lay the chair on its side, so you can reach all four screws.
2. Undo the four screws under the pad and keep them together.
3. Take the old pad off. It slides forwards and off the arm.
4. Fit the new pad and line up all four holes.
5. Start all four screws by hand before tightening any of them. Then tighten them in a cross pattern, front left then back right and so on, so the pad pulls down evenly.
6. Check the pad still slides and pivots smoothly, then repeat on the other side.

Good to know

• If the pad feels stiff to slide after fitting, one screw is probably too tight. Back each one off slightly.
• Use a hand screwdriver. With four screws close together it is easy to strip one with a drill.
