Our Refurbishment Process

Every refurbished chair we sell goes through the same nine steps in our London workshop. Most of the Herman Miller chairs we take in have spent years in busy offices, so a wipe-down is not enough: we strip each one down, replace what is worn, service the mechanisms and test every adjustment before it goes out. Here is exactly what that involves.

1. Inspection

We check the whole chair before any work starts: frame, base, seat and back mesh, arms, tilt, recline and height adjustment. We also note the chair's size (A, B or C) and version (Classic or Remastered), because the replacement parts differ between them.

2. Strip-down

The chair is taken apart into its main sections: seat, back, arms, mechanism and base. Every part is sorted into one of three piles: fine to reuse, needs repairing, or needs replacing.

3. Deep clean

The frame, base, arms and mesh are cleaned by hand. The mesh is checked closely for tears, sagging and pulled strands. Any mesh that does not pass is replaced, not patched.

4. Frame and finish

Scuffs, chips and scratches on the frame and base are touched up. Where the finish is too worn to touch up, the part is resprayed.

5. Worn parts replaced

Anything worn, cracked or not working as it should is replaced with genuine or high-quality compatible parts. Every chair is different, so we replace what that chair needs rather than working from a fixed list.

6. Mechanisms serviced

The tilt, tension, tilt limiter, forward tilt (where fitted) and height adjustment are serviced and lubricated. Arm mechanisms are tightened to take out any wobble.

7. Reassembly

The chair is rebuilt with every bolt checked and tightened, and any cracked or missing fixings replaced.

8. Testing

We sit in every chair and work every adjustment through its full range: height, tilt, tension, tilt limiter, arms and lumbar. If anything sticks, clicks or feels loose, the chair goes back a step.

9. Final check and packing

A last clean and a look over the whole chair, then it is packed to protect it on the way to you. You can also collect from our London storage unit by appointment.

12-month warranty

Every refurbished chair comes with a 12-month warranty from the date of delivery on UK orders. It covers structural faults in the frame, base and mechanical parts, faults in the tilt and height adjustment, and failures of any part we have refurbished or replaced.
